When a school is identified as not meeting the state established Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) proficiency percentages for two consecutive years or more, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires that the school be identified as a program improvement school and that the school offer school choice to parents whose students attend the identified school. This means that if a parent wishes, he/she may send their child to another school in the district that is currently meeting AYP and transportation costs must be covered by the school district. However, since our school district has only one school to choose from (ie., we are not a large district with more than one elementary, middle or secondary school), the school choice provision is not available to parents.
